Almaty: Where the City Ends and the Mountains Begin

There’s a moment in Almaty that tends to happen unexpectedly. You’re standing at a pedestrian crossing, coffee in hand, waiting for the light to change. Cars move past in steady rhythm. The city feels orderly, rational, even slightly understated. Then you glance south — and the skyline dissolves into a wall of snow-covered peaks rising more than 4,000 metres into the sky.

Few major cities in the world sit so close to serious mountains. Fewer still allow you to reach a 2,500-metre alpine lake within an hour of leaving a metro station that costs just 150 tenge (roughly a few cents) to ride.

Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city, is home to approximately 2.2–2.3 million people (2024). Though it lost capital status to Astana in 1997, it remains the country’s financial, cultural and intellectual centre. It is modern but not flashy, spacious but not overwhelming — a city built on a grid pattern at 700–900 metres above sea level, gently rising towards the dramatic Trans-Ili Alatau mountains along its southern edge.

To understand Almaty, you have to understand that geography is not background scenery here. It is the main character.

A City Shaped by Elevation

Almaty sits in southeastern Kazakhstan, around 25 kilometres from the Kyrgyzstan border. Locals give directions using altitude rather than compass points: “up” means south, towards the mountains; “down” means north.

The climate is continental but softened by elevation. January averages hover between −5°C and −2°C, while July typically reaches 28–32°C. Annual precipitation averages around 600–650 mm, with spring and early autumn offering the most pleasant conditions. April–May and September–October are widely considered the best months to visit — warm enough for café terraces, clear enough for mountain views.

The city’s wide boulevards and tree-lined streets reflect its Russian imperial and Soviet planning heritage. Unlike many Silk Road cities, Almaty does not have an ancient walled old town. It grew from a 19th-century fort and evolved into a Soviet-era cultural centre. The result is a city that feels organised and breathable, with green corridors and surprisingly manageable distances.

Arriving in Almaty

Almaty International Airport (ALA), located 15 kilometres northeast of the centre, is one of Central Asia’s busiest hubs. Direct flights connect it to Istanbul (approximately 4.5–5 hours), Dubai (4 hours), Frankfurt (6–7 hours), Seoul (6 hours) and Delhi (3.5 hours), among others.

From the airport, the journey into the city takes 30–45 minutes by car. Taxi rides via Yandex Go generally cost between 1,500 and 3,000 KZT depending on traffic and destination. Bus No. 92 runs regularly into the city centre for about 150 KZT, though travel time may extend to an hour in peak traffic.

For overland travellers, Almaty-2 railway station handles long-distance trains. The journey from Astana takes around 13–15 hours; from Tashkent, roughly 16 hours. Trains in Kazakhstan are comfortable and remain one of the country’s most atmospheric travel experiences.

Many nationalities can enter Kazakhstan visa-free for up to 30 days, but regulations should always be confirmed prior to travel.

The Cultural Core

Begin in Panfilov Park, one of the city’s most recognisable green spaces. Families stroll beneath mature trees, teenagers gather near the war memorial, and pigeons scatter dramatically at the slightest movement. Rising from the centre of the park is the Ascension Cathedral, completed in 1907. At 56 metres tall, it is one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world — an extraordinary feat in an earthquake-prone region.

Its pastel exterior — shades of soft yellow and mint green — gives it a storybook appearance, yet the interior iconostasis and quiet reverence remind visitors that this is an active place of worship. Entry is free, and an hour is well spent here.

A short walk away lies the Green Bazaar (Zelyony Bazaar), open from 09:00 to 19:00, Tuesday through Sunday. This is where Almaty’s flavours converge: pyramids of dried apricots, stacks of walnuts, local honey, spices, fresh herbs and the distinctive horse meat sausages known as kazy. Allow at least an hour. Bring cash.

For historical context, the Central State Museum near Abay Metro Station provides an overview of Kazakhstan’s past, from ancient nomadic cultures through Soviet industrialisation to independence in 1991. Entry fees typically range between 500 and 1,000 KZT. A thorough visit takes two hours.

Art enthusiasts should consider the Kasteyev Art Museum, which houses an extensive collection spanning Kazakh, Russian and Central Asian works.

Elevating the Experience

No visit to Almaty is complete without ascending Kok-Tobe Hill. The cable car ride — approximately six to seven minutes — costs around 8,000 KZT return. From 1,100 metres above sea level, the city spreads beneath you in geometric order, framed by mountains that feel improbably close.

But Kok-Tobe is only the introduction.

Sixteen kilometres south of the centre lies Medeu, at 1,691 metres altitude. Known as one of the highest outdoor ice rinks in the world, it operates during winter months and transforms into a mountain escape in summer.

Above Medeu sits Shymbulak Ski Resort, where lifts rise to roughly 3,200 metres. In winter (November–April), the slopes attract skiers and snowboarders. In summer, the same infrastructure offers hikers access to alpine terrain without the need for technical climbing skills.

Further still — around 28–30 kilometres from the city centre — lies Big Almaty Lake at 2,510 metres. The journey takes approximately one to one-and-a-half hours by car. The water, fed by glacial melt, shifts in colour depending on season and sunlight, often turning a striking turquoise in autumn. Temperatures here can be 10–15°C cooler than in the city below.

It is rare to find a metropolis where such dramatic altitude changes are so easily accessible.

Beyond the City

For those with additional time, Charyn Canyon sits 200 kilometres east of Almaty — a three to three-and-a-half-hour drive each way. Stretching nearly 90 kilometres along the Charyn River, its red rock formations have drawn comparisons to the Grand Canyon, though on a smaller scale.

Closer but equally rewarding are the Kolsai Lakes, located roughly 300 kilometres from Almaty (a four-to-five-hour drive). Set between 1,800 and 2,700 metres above sea level, they are better suited to overnight trips.

Eating and Staying

Almaty’s dining scene reflects its multicultural population. A typical meal in a local café costs between 3,000 and 5,000 KZT. Mid-range restaurants range from 6,000 to 10,000 KZT per person, while fine dining establishments exceed 15,000 KZT.

Traditional dishes include beshbarmak, lagman noodles, manty dumplings and grilled shashlik. Tap water is not recommended for drinking; bottled water is inexpensive and widely available.

Accommodation is concentrated around Abay Avenue, Dostyk Avenue and Panfilov Park.

Summer sees higher demand, so early booking is advisable.

Moving Around

Almaty’s metro currently consists of a single line with 11 stations, operating from 06:00 to midnight. A single ride costs 150 KZT. It is clean, safe and efficient.

Buses cover most districts, with fares around 150 KZT in cash or approximately 80 KZT using the ONAY transport card or app. Ride-hailing apps are widely used, and central taxi rides typically range between 1,000 and 2,500 KZT.

Traffic can be heavy during peak hours (08:00–10:00 and 17:30–19:30), so allow extra time when crossing the city.

The Essential Perspective

Statistics can define a place — 2.3 million residents, 30 kilometres to alpine lakes, 3,200 metres at the top of Shymbulak — but they don’t fully explain it.

Almaty’s appeal lies in its contrasts. It is urban yet edged by wilderness. Structured yet softened by trees. Soviet in layout yet increasingly contemporary in culture. It feels grounded, lived-in and unpretentious.

Three full days is the minimum to experience both city life and mountain air without rushing. Stay longer if possible. Because in Almaty, the mountains are not a day trip — they are a constant presence, reshaping the city’s identity every time you look up.

And sooner or later, you will look up.
