Bukhara: Historical monument guided walking tour

Begin your walk at Nadir Divan-Begi Madrasah, beside the historic Lyabi-Hauz complex. Built in the 17th century, the madrasah is known for the striking mosaic figures above its entrance. Around the tranquil pool, pause beneath the shade of old mulberry trees and take in the surrounding ensemble of madrasah, khanaka and historic buildings. Built in the 17th century, it is admired for its vivid tilework, painted interiors and intricate decorative details.

The route then leads to Poi-Kalyan, Bukhara’s celebrated architectural ensemble. See the vast courtyard of Kalyan Mosque, admire the richly decorated façade of Mir-i-Arab Madrasah, and look up at the Kalon Minaret. Built in the 12th century, the minaret has long been one of the defining features of Bukhara’s skyline.

From Poi-Kalyan, continue to Ark Fortress, the historic citadel and former residence of Bukhara’s emirs. Behind its imposing walls, the Ark once contained a royal court and the facilities of a small city.
