Bayterek Tower is the symbol you will see on every brochure, and for good reason: climb to the observation deck at golden hour and the city spreads out around you in a way that feels genuinely cinematic. Almaty & The Mountains: A City With an Altitude

Almaty is Kazakhstan's cultural soul. The capital may have moved north in 1997, but the country's creative and intellectual life never really followed. Almaty stayed.

What surprises most visitors — even those who have read the guidebooks — is the proximity of the mountains. Forty minutes from your café on Panfilov Street, you can be skiing at 3,000 meters.

Medeo & Shymbulak

Medeo is the world's highest outdoor speed skating rink, built into a mountain valley at 1,691 meters. Even in summer, when the ice is long gone, people come here to walk the dam, breathe the air, and look up at peaks that seem implausibly close to the city. Take the cable car from Medeo to Shymbulak ski resort and you are suddenly in an entirely different world — pine forests, granite ridges, and a silence that feels like a physical presence.

Big Almaty Lake

No photograph does it justice. The lake sits at 2,511 meters in the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains, and its color — a turquoise so vivid it looks artificially enhanced — is the result of glacial meltwater and suspended sediment. We include a sunrise hike here on every Almaty itinerary. Clients consistently rate it the single most beautiful thing they have seen in Central Asia.

Plan three to four days in Almaty. The city itself rewards exploration: the Green Bazaar for food, the Central State Museum for history, the Kok-Tobe cable car for evening views. Then get out into the mountains.

Charyn Canyon: Kazakhstan's Grand Canyon

We take every group there. Without exception.

Charyn Canyon stretches 80 kilometers and drops to 300 meters at its deepest point. The rock formations — eroded over millions of years into fins, towers, and amphitheaters of orange and red sandstone — look like something transplanted from the American Southwest. Except there are almost no other tourists.

The Valley of Castles is the most famous section, and deservedly so. Walk the canyon floor in the late afternoon, when the light is low and the shadows turn the walls a deep burnt red, and you understand immediately why we never skip this stop.

We take every group to Charyn Canyon. Without exception. The light in the late afternoon turns the walls a color you will not find a name for.

Logistics Matter Here

Charyn is 200 kilometers east of Almaty on a road that is part tarmac, part optimism. Private transfers are non-negotiable — not because the drive is dangerous, but because the flexibility to stop, to photograph, to change the timing based on light and weather is what makes the difference between a good trip and a defining one.
