Registan Square is not merely a collection of monuments — it is a stage where six centuries of ambition, faith, science, power and beauty still whisper to those who stand at its center. The very name Registan, derived from Persian, means “sandy place.” Long before the turquoise domes pierced the skyline, the ground here was covered in sand — some say to absorb the blood of public executions that once took place here; others say simply because it was an open, windswept clearing. Either way, this square has always absorbed history.

In the age of the Timurid Empire, Registan was the beating heart of Samarkand. Royal decrees were proclaimed here to the blast of massive copper trumpets called dzharchis. Armies marched out from this very space. Merchants traded silk and spices along the Silk Road routes that converged nearby. It was marketplace, political arena, educational hub, and theatre of empire — all at once

Centuries later, George Curzon, the British traveler and future Viceroy of India, would call it “the noblest public square in the world.” And when you stand at its center, surrounded by walls of shimmering blue, you understand why. The mosaics swirl in liquid shades of cobalt and lapis. The minarets rise like patterned spears. The portals loom so large that they almost bend your sense of scale. The effect is deliberate — to overwhelm, to humble, to astonish.

But Registan’s true power lies not only in beauty — it lies in the stories of its three madrasahs.

Ulugh Beg Madrasah (1417–1420) — Where the Stars Were Studied

On the left side of the square stands the oldest of the three — the Ulugh Beg Madrasah. Built between 1417 and 1420 by Ulugh Beg, grandson of Amir Timur, it was not simply a religious school. It was one of the most advanced scientific institutions of the 15th-century Muslim world.

Ulugh Beg was not primarily a conqueror — he was an astronomer and mathematician. While other rulers built fortresses, he built observatories. While others collected tribute, he collected knowledge. The façade of his madrasah reflects this intellectual spirit. Look closely at the portal — the geometric mosaics resemble constellations. Stylized stars scatter across the entrance arch, echoing the celestial charts he would later produce.

The building itself is a masterpiece of Timurid symmetry. A massive iwan (vaulted portal) dominates the square-facing façade, flanked by slender minarets. Behind it lies a square courtyard once surrounded by student dormitories and lecture halls. In its prime, scholars from across the Islamic world gathered here. Among them was the great Persian poet and mystic Abdul-Rahman Jami.

Ulugh Beg himself lectured within these walls. His observatory, built later outside the city, produced one of the most accurate star catalogues since Ptolemy. For a moment in history, Samarkand became the intellectual capital of the region — a Renaissance city long before Europe’s Renaissance reached its peak.

Sher-Dor Madrasah (1619–1636) — The Defiance of Tradition

Two centuries later, during the rule of the Uzbek Janid dynasty, the governor Yalangtush Bakhodir sought to restore Registan’s former glory. He ordered the construction of Sher-Dor Madrasah directly opposite Ulugh Beg’s building.

Its name means “Having Tigers,” and for good reason. On the portal are two large mosaic creatures often described as tigers, though they resemble mythical lions, each carrying a rising sun upon its back. This imagery is startling — Islamic architecture traditionally avoids depicting living beings. Yet here they are, bold and defiant, merging Persian symbolism with Turkic artistic flair.

The message is layered. The rising sun may symbolize power and enlightenment. The predator suggests strength. It is both political statement and artistic rebellion. The composition mirrors Ulugh Beg’s madrasah in scale and structure, yet its decoration carries a different emotional tone — more dramatic, more assertive.

Walking into its courtyard, one senses a deliberate dialogue between centuries. Sher-Dor does not imitate Ulugh Beg; it answers him

Tilya-Kori Madrasah (1646–1660) — The Golden Prayer

Completing the ensemble is Tilya-Kori, built between 1646 and 1660. Its name means “Gilded.” And once you step inside the mosque portion of this madrasah, you understand why.

Unlike the other two, Tilya-Kori served not only as a school but also as the main congregational mosque of the square. Its façade appears calm and balanced — but the interior explodes in gold. The mosque hall is richly gilded, layered with painted ornamentation that seems to melt into light. The dome’s interior glows like captured sunlight.

From the outside, it balances the composition of the square. From the inside, it overwhelms the senses with radiance. Together with Ulugh Beg and Sher-Dor, it creates a harmonious triad — science, strength, and spirituality framed in tile.

Legends, Empires, and Influence

Registan’s story stretches far beyond Samarkand. Its architectural vocabulary influenced Safavid monuments in Isfahan, Mughal masterpieces like the Taj Mahal in Agra, and even early 20th-century mosques as far as St Petersburg. When Timur rebuilt Samarkand in the 14th century, he brought with him artisans from across his vast empire — Persia, India, Anatolia. New ceramic technologies, durable glazes, and intricate mosaic techniques allowed decoration on a scale never seen before.

Samarkand had always been cosmopolitan. Greeks passed through it. Chinese scholars wrote about it. Marco Polo described it. Genghis Khan destroyed it. Timur rebuilt it. Each empire left a layer; Registan preserved the essence.

Behind Sher-Dor stands the Chorsu dome, once a bustling bazaar at the crossroads of major Silk Road routes. To this day, craftspeople sell ceramics, embroidered textiles, jewelry, and carved knives nearby. Trade never truly left this square.

There is also a quiet local belief: stand exactly at the center of the square facing Tilya-Kori and make a sincere wish — and it will be granted. Whether myth or not, many visitors try.

Epigraphy — The Voices in the Walls

In recent years, a major scholarly effort known as “Architectural Epigraphy of Uzbekistan” has decoded more than 1,500 inscriptions across the country’s monuments, including Registan. Verses in Persian, Chagatai Turkic, and Arabic — poems, moral advice, historical dates, royal decrees — were translated and studied. Over 200 poetic inscriptions and the names of more than 100 craftsmen were identified.

Registan today stands restored, illuminated at night, hosting the Sharq Taronalari international music festival and welcoming visitors from around the world. The Soviets restored it. Independent Uzbekistan preserved it. Time itself tried to erode it — and failed
