Dushanbe → Khorugh: Days 1–3

The journey begins in Dushanbe, Tajikistan’s capital — a city of wide Soviet boulevards, excellent plov, and the curious energy of a place that knows it sits at the gateway to something extraordinary.

The road south toward Khorugh follows the Panj River for much of its length — the natural border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan. This is one of the defining visual experiences of the entire route: across a river that is sometimes no more than 30 meters wide, you can see Afghan villages, farmers working their fields, children playing near the water. There are no fences. There is no wall. The border is simply the river, and the contrast between the two sides — both ancient, both deeply human — is something that stays with you.

Day 1 takes you through the Vakhsh Valley and into the mountains south of Dushanbe. The first serious climb comes quickly. By evening, you are at altitude that city lungs will notice.

The Wakhan Corridor is a narrow strip of Afghan territory — a political artifact of the 19th-century Great Game, drawn deliberately to prevent British India and Tsarist Russia from sharing a border — that stretches east from Khorugh like a finger pointing toward China. Along its northern edge runs the Tajik side of the valley, and it is here that the M41 route offers one of the most historically charged landscapes in Asia.
