It was known to Alexander the Great, who conquered it in 329 BCE (calling it Maracanda), and who famously declared it more beautiful than he had imagined.

Its position explains everything: Samarkand sits in the Zerafshan River valley in northeastern Uzbekistan, precisely at the point where the northern steppe route, the southern mountain route through the Pamirs, and the western route toward Persia and Mesopotamia all converge. Any caravan moving between China and the Mediterranean had to pass through — or very close to — Samarkand. The Story of Ulugh Beg — The Astronomer King

One figure stands as the perfect embodiment of what the Silk Road's intellectual legacy actually means: Muhammad Taraghay, known as Ulugh Beg — 'Great Prince.' He was Timur's grandson, and he ruled Samarkand from 1409 to 1449. He was also one of the greatest astronomers of the medieval world.

Ulugh Beg built his observatory on a hill outside Samarkand between 1424 and 1428. The main instrument was not a telescope — the telescope had not yet been invented — but a massive stone sextant cut into the hillside, 40 metres in radius, aligned precisely with the meridian. Using this instrument, Ulugh Beg and his team calculated the positions of 1,018 stars with extraordinary precision. His value for the length of the sidereal year — 365 days, 6 hours, 10 minutes, and 8 seconds — was accurate to within 58 seconds of the modern value. In the 15th century. In Samarkand.

Ulugh Beg invited the greatest mathematicians and astronomers of the Islamic world to Samarkand: Jamshid al-Kashi, Qadi Zada al-Rumi, and Ali Kushji, among others. His madrasa on the Registan was designed not for religious instruction but as a centre of scientific learning. He was, in the most precise sense, running a medieval research university at the center of the Silk Road.

He was assassinated in 1449 by his own son. His star tables survived, traveled to Europe, and were used by Edmund Halley. His observatory ruins are still visible in Samarkand today, a 10-minute walk from the Registan.
