In 1975, mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot coined the word 'fractal' — a shape that is self-similar at every scale, in which smaller parts repeat the structure of the whole. It was a revolutionary concept in Western mathematics. In Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva, architects had been building with fractal principles for approximately 600 years before Mandelbrot gave them a name.

The tilework, muqarnas ceilings, and geometric ornament of Uzbekistan's great Islamic monuments are not decoration. The craftspeople who produced them did not call it mathematics. They called it craft. But the underlying logic is identical to what 20th-century mathematicians eventually formalized in academic journals.

Section 1: The Mathematics Behind the Tilework

What Muqarnas Actually Are

Muqarnas (from Arabic, sometimes called 'honeycomb vaulting' or 'stalactite ceilings') are three-dimensional decorative structures built from interlocking geometric cells, stacked in projecting tiers to create a transition from flat wall to curved dome. They appear in domes, arches, niches, minarets, and entrance portals across the Islamic world from Cordoba to Kashgar — and some of the most extraordinary examples are in Uzbekistan.

The structures originated in the 10th century CE in Persia and Mesopotamia under the Buyid and Seljuk dynasties. One of the earliest surviving examples is the Arab-Ata Mausoleum, built in 977–978 CE — in Tim, a small town near Samarkand. The technology was therefore not imported into Central Asia from elsewhere; it was, in part, developed here.

The 15th-century Timurid mathematician al-Kashi — who worked in Samarkand under Ulugh Beg — wrote the earliest surviving mathematical definition of muqarnas: 'A ceiling like a staircase with facets and a flat roof. Every facet intersects the adjacent one at either a right angle, or half a right angle, or their sum, or another combination of these two.' This was the first formal mathematical description of a structure that had been built by craftsmen for 400 years — meaning the craftsmen understood the geometry before the mathematicians could articulate it.

THE FRACTAL CONNECTION:

Fractal geometry describes patterns that are self-similar — smaller sections repeat the structure of the whole. A muqarnas ceiling is precisely this: each cell is a miniature version of the tier above it, which is itself a smaller version of the overall composition. The patterns are 'scale-invariant,' meaning they have no logical limit on how large or how small they can be constructed. Al-Kashi understood this in the 15th century. Mandelbrot named it in the 20th. The builders who worked in Samarkand and Bukhara understood it geometrically in both — and encoded it in ceramic and plaster for 400 years before anyone wrote it down formally.

How Tilework Patterns Are Constructed: The Geometry Step by Step

The geometric patterns visible on every major monument in Uzbekistan — the interlocking stars, the infinite-lattice grids, the rotating squares — are all derived from a relatively small set of mathematical operations: tessellation (filling a plane with shapes that repeat without gap or overlap), rotation (applying angular symmetry around a central point), and reflection (mirroring patterns across axes).

The complexity comes from combining these operations. A 4-fold tessellation — based on the square — produces one class of patterns. A 5-fold tessellation — based on the pentagon, a shape that cannot tile the plane using purely regular shapes — produces another class, including the famous 'girih tiles' discovered in 2007 by physicists at Harvard and Princeton to be structurally identical to quasicrystals, a mathematical concept not described by Western science until 1984. Medieval Islamic craftsmen were tiling with quasiperiodic patterns 500 years before quasicrystals were discovered.

In Uzbekistan's monuments, all of these pattern families are present. The exterior tilework of the Registan's three madrasas uses predominantly 8-fold and 12-fold symmetry. The interior muqarnas work ascends through 4-fold to higher symmetries. The calligraphic bands that ring each dome are themselves mathematical: the proportional system governing the size of letters relative to the arc of the dome was calculated using geometric series.

Al-Kashi and the Samarkand Scientific Tradition

The muqarnas definition quoted above comes from Ghiyath al-Din Jamshid al-Kashi, a Persian mathematician who worked at Ulugh Beg's Samarkand scientific circle in the early 15th century. Al-Kashi was one of the greatest computational mathematicians of the medieval world. Among his achievements: he calculated the value of pi to 16 decimal places (a record that stood for approximately 150 years), he developed what is now called the 'law of cosines' in trigonometry, and he wrote the Miftah al-Hisab (Key to Arithmetic) — a comprehensive mathematical treatise that included the first systematic treatment of decimal fractions.

Al-Kashi was working 100 metres from the Registan when he wrote his definition of the muqarnas. The intellectual tradition that produced the tilework of the Registan and the mathematical formalization of its geometric principles were not separate activities — they were simultaneous, in the same city, in the same generation. The buildings and the mathematics were produced by the same culture at the same moment.

Section 2: Where We Take You — Three Buildings That Require Explanation

Most visitors to Uzbekistan's monument cities see the buildings. Our guides teach travelers to read them. There is a significant difference. The following three monuments are the ones we consider indispensable for anyone interested in Islamic architecture at the level this article addresses.

REGISTAN TIMING:

We always arrive at the Registan at 7:30 AM. By 10:00 AM, the best light is gone. The morning sun hits the tilework from the east, raking across the geometric relief at a low angle and making three-dimensional what appears flat in midday overhead light. The Tilla-Kori's gold leaf catches this light differently from the blue ceramic — and for approximately 45 minutes, the whole square is the color of something that was clearly designed to be experienced at this exact time of day.

Tilla-Kori Madrasa — Samarkand, Registan Square (1646–1660)

The Registan's 'Gilded Madrasa' — the most complete surviving example of 17th-century Timurid decorative mathematics in ceramic and gold.

Name meaning — 'Tilla Kori' literally means 'decorated with gold' or 'gilded' in Persian/Uzbek. The name refers to the interior mosque, not the exterior tilework.

The ceiling — The mosque interior has a flat ceiling that appears concave — a trompe-l'oeil dome created through tapered perspective geometry. It is covered in gold leaf applied using the 'kundal' technique: raised relief painted in gold, creating dimensional texture that catches light at different angles throughout the day.

The gold — The interior of the mosque is considered the richest decorative scheme in the Registan ensemble. It served as Samarkand's main Friday mosque for much of its history, meaning this gold-leaf geometry was the background to weekly communal prayer.

Muqarnas — The transition from the rectangular walls to the illusory dome is achieved through muqarnas — the same fractal honeycomb structure discussed in Section 1, here executed in plaster and ceramic, covered in gold.

The tilework — The exterior facade uses the full vocabulary of Timurid tilework: turquoise and cobalt mosaic in geometric and arabesque patterns, calligraphic bands in white on blue, and ornamental cartouches in polychrome ceramic mosaic.

Construction — Built on the orders of Yalangtush Bakhadur, ruler of Samarkand. Took 14 years (1646–1660). Completed the Registan ensemble; it was built on the site of an earlier caravanserai that had stood for two centuries.

UNESCO status — Part of 'Samarkand — Crossroads of Cultures,' inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001.

Kalon Minaret — Bukhara (1127 CE)

The oldest major monument in Uzbekistan's Silk Road circuit — 900 years old, and the most mathematically sophisticated minaret of its era.

Age — Built in 1127 CE under the Kara-Khanid ruler Arslan Khan. It is approximately 900 years old and has been standing continuously for that entire period.

Height — 46 metres — one of the tallest structures in Central Asia when built. The minaret tapers from 9 metres diameter at the base to 6 metres at the top, a proportional system calculated to create visual stability at height.

The 14 bands — The shaft is divided into 14 decorative bands, each with a different geometric pattern. No two bands repeat the same design. This was a deliberate demonstration of the range of geometric vocabulary available to the craftsmen — a portfolio of the tradition's full scope, compressed into a single object.

The brickwork — The patterns are made entirely from fired brick — not tiles applied to a surface, but bricks laid in varying orientations to create three-dimensional geometric relief. The same material provides structure and decoration simultaneously.

Genghis Khan — The Kalon Minaret survived Genghis Khan's sack of Bukhara in 1220 — which destroyed virtually every other structure in the city. According to historical accounts, Genghis tilted his head back to look up at the minaret and his hat fell off. He took this as a sign and ordered the minaret spared. The story may be legend; the survival is fact.

Why it matters — The Kalon Minaret represents the moment when brick geometry reached its maximum vocabulary in Central Asia — a full repertoire of pattern, executed before the later introduction of ceramic tile. It is mathematics before color, which makes the geometry itself more visible.

Juma Mosque (Friday Mosque) — Khiva — Itchan Kala (10th century / rebuilt 1778–1782)

A hall of 212 carved wooden columns — each unique, some more than 1,000 years old — that converts a single space into a visible history of geometric carving across a millennium.

The columns — 212 carved wooden columns support the flat roof in a grid of 3.15m x 3.15m. No two columns are identical. Each was carved by a different craftsman, in a different period, using different geometric vocabulary — creating an unintentional museum of regional woodcarving styles across 1,000 years.

The oldest — The four most ancient columns date to the 10th and 11th centuries CE. They were salvaged from earlier structures and incorporated into the current building. The Kufic inscriptions on their shafts identify them as donations by a scholar named Fakih Abul Fadl al-Muhammad Lyaisy.

The carving chronology — The carving styles of the columns document the full arc of regional woodcarving: 10th-11th century (deep-relief Kufic inscriptions and geometric interlace), 12th-14th century (lighter relief, more complex geometric lattice), 15th-16th century (flatter, imitative of earlier styles), 18th century (Khivan baroque, ornate floral and vegetal).

The spatial effect — The building has no dome, no arched portals, no windows — only three doorways and small skylights in the flat roof. The effect of walking through 212 carved columns in dim light, with shafts of sunlight descending from the roof apertures, is widely described as the most meditative architectural interior in Uzbekistan.

Mathematical significance — The grid layout of the columns is a classic 'hypostyle' plan — arguably the oldest type of large-scale Islamic interior. The uniform spacing creates a visual repetition that the eye reads as tessellation in three dimensions. There is no single focal point; the geometry generates infinite depth in any direction.

UNESCO status — Part of Itchan Kala, Khiva — the first site in Uzbekistan inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List (1990). The Juma Mosque is considered one of the principal monuments of the ensemble.

Section 3: The Living Craft Tradition — Where the Mathematics Is Still Being Made

The architectural heritage of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva is not only historical. The craft traditions that produced it — ceramic tile-cutting, woodcarving, and blue-glaze pottery — are still practiced by working craftspeople who have trained for decades under masters in an unbroken master-apprentice lineage. The most important center for this living tradition is Rishtan.

Rishtan — The Fergana Valley's Living Ceramic Workshop

Rishtan is a small town (population approximately 50,000) in the Fergana Valley, 50 kilometres from Fergana city. Archaeological excavations have found ceramic kilns dating to the 2nd–1st century BCE. The town has been producing ceramics continuously for over 2,000 years. It is considered the oldest continuously operating ceramic center in Central Asia.

What makes Rishtan ceramics distinct from all other regional ceramic traditions — and directly relevant to anyone interested in Uzbekistan's architectural tilework — is the 'ishkor' glaze. Ishkor is a natural blue glaze produced from the ash of a specific plant (related to saltwort, a tumbleweed-like plant found in the mountains above the Fergana Valley). This glaze produces the cobalt blue, turquoise, and aquamarine colors that define both Rishtan ceramics and the exterior tilework of Uzbekistan's great monuments. The two traditions share the same material heritage — and in Rishtan, you can watch it being made.

The ishkor recipe — the specific ratio of plant ash to mineral colorants, the firing temperature, the precise blue produced — is proprietary knowledge passed within families across generations. Master craftspeople in Rishtan include Rustam Usmanov and his son Damir, who have been producing and exhibiting internationally since 2004 and represent one of the most direct living links to the pre-Soviet craft tradition.

Samarkand Tile and Woodcarving Workshops

Samarkand also has active workshops where traditional tile mosaic ('naqqosh') and woodcarving are still practiced. The technique used for the exterior tilework of the Registan — mosaic faience, in which individual pieces are hand-cut and assembled into geometric patterns — requires the same mathematical understanding as the patterns themselves.
